Wherever possible, we do our level best to walk the walk as well as talk the talk. Regular readers of this blog will be well aware that we’re heavily involved in the community vegetable and fruit plot in our local park in Keynsham. A project that in an ideal world would be replicated in every neighbourhood. All part of the long term aim of decentralising and localising our food supply systems. It’s not easy work – sometimes it can be a slog. The report below, first posted on the Keynsham Community Veg Plot in the Park Facebook page will hopefully give you a small indication of what’s involved:
It was a useful, albeit a shorter than normal work session today. More leeks were planted and also, some kale. The last of the spinach was cropped and, the bed it was in was dug up. A number of onions were picked and also, a few courgettes. Pretty much all of the gooseberries have now been picked. Overall, the plot is very productive this year, with plenty more produce to be cropped:) To finish off, there was the watering which, given the dry spell we're experiencing, is a vital task.
So, today's priorities were planting, cropping and watering. Given the hot and humid conditions, we could only work for just over an hour today. As a result, the tidying and weeding that needed doing in readiness for the judging for Keynsham In Bloom scheduled for July 4 didn't get done. To compensate for that, there will be an extra work session this coming Wednesday (2.7), starting at 2.30pm.
The Keynsham Music Festival is taking place next weekend (Saturday 5/Sunday 6.7). We're planning to do some leafleting on the Saturday to promote the plot, starting at just after 3pm. If anyone could come along to help with this, it really would be appreciated:)
The scheduled work sessions are back to normal - the first Saturday in each month and the third Wednesday. The next two will be on Wednesday 16 July and Saturday 2 August, both starting at 2pm. Any new volunteers will be more than welcome to come along and help out.
